Paddock Johnson were appointed following an invited competition to undertake a series of projects at Great Moreton Hall for a private client, including a swimming pool and spa facility within the former kitchen garden and outbuildings.
Great Moreton Hall is an exceptional, Grade II* Listed private residence situated south of Congleton, in Moreton cum Alcumlow, designed by Edward Blore for the Ackers family and built in 1841. The current owners have lovingly restored the main hall over the past two decades with attention now focusing on the ancillary buildings and wider estate.
Our brief was to provide a full 25m length lap pool with associated changing, gym and steam room facilities, to have the look and feel of a luxury hotel. The concept for the interior design was centred around embracing the unique historic setting. As the new build element, the pool is minimalist and contemporary, focusing on the play of light and views to the historic walls beyond. The more intimate changing and steam room areas are tucked away in the former outbuildings utilising finishes which reference the Mow Cop stone of the main hall and the cobbled surface of the courtyards.
